IPCC investigation update into actions of Avon and Somerset police before the death of Robert Cox in Bristol

The Independent Police Complaints Commission independent investigation into Avon and Somerset Constabulary contact with 24-year-old Robert Cox prior to his death on 9 August 2013 has completed a number of actions into police contact on the day he died and the three months before his death.

The IPCC investigation is into police actions and decisions before Mr Cox died.

Mr Cox lived at the Egerton Road Project in Bristol and there had been prior police contact before he was found by two members of the public and two special constables at about 9.50pm on 9 August. Mr Cox was taken to Frenchay Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 10.47pm.

IPCC Deputy Chair Rachel Cerfontyne said:

“My condolences go to Mr Cox’s family and friends for their tragic loss. We have met his family and explained what the IPCC will be investigating and will continue to provide them with regular updates.

“Our investigation is focusing on the decisions and actions of police officers and call handlers on the day Mr Cox died. We will also look at relevant police contact in the three months before Mr Cox’s death.

“The IPCC investigation has taken statements from three police call handlers and two police officers and we have also obtained relevant CCTV footage.

“There is a parallel murder investigation and that does constrain how much information we can put into the public domain at this stage.”
