Public consultation: Waste Water

The government is consulting the public on its new strategy for dealing with waste water and sewage.

The public is invited to attend drop-in events and to read the consultation documents.

Without suitable treatment, the waste water and sewage produced every day would damage the water environment and create problems for public health, water resources and wildlife. The government is required under European law to prevent environmental damage and poor water quality by providing adequate waste water infrastructure.

The consultation document explains the background to the draft National Policy Statement and its purpose. It also gives information on some specific 'nationally significant' infrastructure projects such as the prevention of sewage overflows into the River Thames. The Statement will be used to guide decisions on development consent for such projects.

It also poses a number of questions which the public are invited to consider and explains how to respond and the contact details for this. Responses must be received by 22 February 2011.
