Have your say on the future of marine planning in Wales

The first in a series of events across Wales is taking place in Cardiff on Tuesday 4 March to seek people’s views on new proposals that would enable interested parties to have their say on marine planning in Wales.

The Minister for Natural Resources, Alun Davies, launched the proposals in February, which are aimed at developing a robust marine planning system for Wales that will ensure Welsh seas are managed in a more joined up way.

The Minister has said he is committed to having Wales’s first national marine planning process in place by 2015.

Tuesday’s meeting is the first of four events at which people can ask questions about the draft Statement of Participation, which sets out how and when the Welsh Government will engage with the public and partner organisations throughout the marine planning process.

Speaking about the proposals, Alun Davies said:

“The seas around Wales provide significant opportunities for economic growth, which can result in competing demands for space and increasing pressure on our natural resources.

“Wales needs a system of marine planning that says Wales is open for business, but in a way that ensures we are managing our seas for the long term benefit of Wales.

“I want our new marine planning system to be proactive and inclusive, bringing together everyone with an interest in our seas. This draft statement sets out exactly how and when we will seek views from the public and interested organisations during the marine planning process.

“Marine planning is a new concept and the involvement of interested parties is crucial to its success. I would therefore encourage everyone with an interest to attend one of our public meetings to help us to develop a Welsh National Marine plan that will deliver the best long term results for Wales.”

The consultation on the Statement of Public Participation for the Welsh National Marine Plan will run until Friday 28 March 2014.

Details of the events are as follows:

  • 4 March, 2-8pm, Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff
  • 5 March, 2-8pm, Torch Theatre, Milford Haven
  • 12 March, 2-8pm, The Pavilion, Rhyl
