Wayne David visits 2012 Olympic contractors Rowecord

Wales Office Minister Wayne David today Monday 8 February visited Rowecord Engineering Ltd in Newport to hear how work is progressing on its contract to construct a roof for the London 2012 Olympic Aquatics Centre.

Rowecord, which employs more than 600 people, successfully won a contract to provide support for the design and building of the Aquatics Centre roof. The Aquatic Centre, designed by internationally renowned architect Zaha Hadid, will be one of the first things visitors to the Olympic site will see.

Mr David said: “The London 2012 Olympics is not just about London. The benefits it will bring, both culturally and economically, will be felt far beyond the capital, stretching down the M4 and across Wales. Rowecord Engineering is a perfect example of how Wales is benefiting from the Games.

“Rowecord has a long history of structural engineering in the construction of stadia and leisure facilities across Wales, including Parc y Scarlets, the Liberty Stadium and the new SWALEC cricket stadium in Cardiff. This expertise and excellence have been crucial in securing this contract.

“Wales is also benefiting from being the choice location for training camps for teams such as Australia proving that we are on track to reap the benefits of London 2012.”
