Campaign to tackle Domestic Violence around major sporting events

With Wales set to host a number of high profile football, rugby union and rugby league matches over the next few weeks, Minister for Local Government and Government Business, Lesley Griffiths has launched a campaign to tackle the increased levels of domestic abuse which occur around the time of major sporting events.

The publicity campaign, which includes advertising on local radio stations, promotes an anti-violence message and highlights the All Wales Domestic Abuse and Sexual Violence Helpline. A similar campaign ran during last year’s Six Nations tournament led to an increase in calls of almost 10% on the previous year.

The Minister said:

"Violence against women and domestic abuse has no place in modern society and can never be justified. The Welsh Government is determined to tackle all forms of violence against women and domestic abuse and this campaign is part of the ongoing work we are doing to tackle these issues.

"Evidence shows the number of incidents reported to the police increases dramatically around the time of big sporting events. With Cardiff facing Swansea in the first all Welsh Premier League derby match this weekend, the Rugby League World Cup being played partly in Wales and the Autumn Rugby Union Internationals all taking place this month, this campaign provides a very timely reminder and a very strong message: No matter the result and no matter how much alcohol has been drunk, violence against women and domestic abuse is a crime which will not be tolerated."

Anyone affected by domestic abuse in Wales can call the All Wales Domestic Abuse and Sexual Violence Helpline on 0808 80 10 800 or visit www.livefearfree.org.uk for confidential, bilingual, 24-hour information and advice. In an emergency, always dial 999.
