Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust has strengthened its senior leadership team and improved the way it is run, according to Monitor.

The regulator has removed a condition from the trust’s licence which was introduced because of concerns over the effectiveness of its Board and whether its senior leadership team had the capacity and capability to sort out the problems it faced.

Although the trust remains subject to regulatory action on financial grounds, it is making progress. It has developed a credible recovery plan and now needs to deliver its financial plans for the year.

Richard Schofield, Deputy Regional Director at Monitor, said:

We are satisfied that the board is functioning effectively and that the leadership team now has the skills needed to tackle the issues the trust faces and deliver the best for patients.

Although it is good news that the trust is taking steps to sort out its finances, there is much work still to be done to make sure they deliver their financial plans this year.

The regulator will continue to scrutinise the trust’s performance to ensure that further progress is made.
