techUK CEO champions digital transformation with Justice Secretary Michael Gove

techUK's CEO Julian David discusses the implementation of digital across the justice system with Secretary of State for Justice, Rt Hon Michael Gove MP.

Yesterday, techUK met with Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice, Rt Hon Michael Gove MP to discuss the recommendations techUK made in 'Breaking down barriers: The potential for common data standards to transform criminal justice' and his recent comments on the need for digital transformation in justice.

Our CEO Julian David and Associate Director for Defence & Security James Murphy raised the ongoing the implementation of the digital transformation across the entire justice system and the importance of committed leadership in realising the many benefits to all parties involved in the system, including the general public. The Secretary of State said it is was a priority to inject greater energy and pace into the digital agenda but that he recognised the challenges in doing so in a disparate and dynamic environment.

techUK also raised the potential of generating an 'interoperability charter' between the tech industry and the Ministry of Justice (MoJ), building on our work in the health care system with NHS England and NSCIC. The Secretary of State was open to the idea and encouraged techUK to link such a charter to the ongoing Digital Justice project.

techUK and MoJ will continue working together to move the digital transformation agenda forward. On 22 October, techUK is holding a panel session entitled 'Transforming Justice via digital working', with guests from HM Tribunal and Courts Service, the Crown Prosecution Service and the Ministry of Justice.
