COT responds to EFSA consultation on BPA

The Committee on Toxicity of Chemicals in Food, Consumer Products and the Environment (COT) has submitted a response to the European Food Safety Authority’s (EFSA) consultation on its draft opinion on the potential human health risks of bisphenol-A (BPA).

The COT response

The expert Committee 'considered the EFSA draft opinion to be an impressive document, and generally agreed with the conclusions'.

In its draft opinion EFSA proposed a reduced temporary tolerable daily intake (t-TDI) pending the outcome of a long term study currently being undertaken by the National Toxicology Program (NTP) in America. This approach was supported by the COT who 'considered the proposed t-TDI was appropriate'.

The full COT response to EFSA’s draft opinion, and questions and answers on the FSA's view, can be found via the 'related items' link below.

Next steps

When EFSA publishes its opinion on BPA – following consideration of comments received from these consultations – the Food Standards Agency will consider, along with the European Commission and EU member states, whether action is necessary to protect consumers.
