About Chartered Trading Standards Institute
Welcome to CTSI
Founded in 1881 (as the 'Incorporated Society of Inspectors of Weights and Measures'), today's Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI) is one of the world’s longest-established organisations dedicated to the field of Trading Standards and Consumer Protection. After more than 140 years of progress, we remain immensely proud of our close association with the Trading Standards profession and the vital work it continues to do – promoting fair business practices, tackling rogue traders and, ultimately, protecting UK consumers. To keep up-to-date with CTSI's work, you can register to the CTSI channel on WiredGov or follow us on X (previously Twitter), Facebook or LinkedIn.
If you are a consumer looking for help or advice about a particular issue, our Consumer Help pages should point you in the right direction. Similarly, our Business Hub provides information for companies who are committed to helping UK consumers and complying with all the relevant rules and regulations.
Alternatively, if you are a Trading Standards professional - and not yet a member of CTSI - you can read all about our member categories, the requirements for each level, member benefits and lots more, in our Membership Section. And if you're looking to further your career in Trading Standards and Consumer Protection, you can browse current Vacancies on offer around the country, find out about the institute's Training, Qualifications and Development, or read the online version of our Journal of Trading Standards.

Developing leadership within local authorities
CTSI’s Aspiring Leaders in Local Authority Programme:
Professional development is an intrinsic factor for organisations in operating smarter and more efficiently. By helping employees master the skills they need to progress, you can shape the development of your future leaders. As an organisation which for many years has provided professional qualification training, CTSI understands the huge benefits that professional development provides to both employees and their own organisations.
Designed for those working in any service area of local authority, this online programme focusses on self-development, improving skills and equipping aspiring leaders with the tools and confidence to lead their teams and help them learn how to influence and inspire others.
The Programme: Is designed to build confidence and capabilities and develop the skills of those looking to take on more responsibility in the future, or who have recently started their first team leading role. It consists of four individual online bite-size sessions aimed at helping your future leaders to understand their responsibilities to themselves, to others around them and throughout their organisation.
Over these sessions, we will build on the skills, knowledge and behaviours required to support current roles, as well as preparing them for leadership roles they aspire to hold in the future. All sessions are supported with online resources and materials available to download.
All sessions are delivered by Nikki Pasek MBE - who is an experienced trainer specialising in public sector leadership training and development with first-hand experience of the challenges of delivering services in these complex times.
This programme will benefit aspiring leaders working across any local authority service that are:
- lower to middle management level
- new to managerial or leadership role
- aiming or expected to move into management
- working in a management role with no formal management training
- working in a team leader role i.e project manager, Senior TSO
Latest feedback from Aspiring Leaders Programme attendees:
