Asbestos removal

SWS hold a full HSE license and we are members of ARCA (Asbestos Removal Contractors Association). We are fully qualified to carry out any asbestos removal project in the following categories:

  • Notifiable (14-day notification)
  • NNLW1 (Notifiable Non-Licensed Work)
  • NL (Non-Licensed Work)

SWS can act as Principal Contractor, Construction Design Management (CDM), Subcontractor and can also  work on one-off projects or long term frameworks.

We are well versed in ensuring that all grades of asbestos are removed safely and submit all the necessary notifications, and discuss the best time for work to be undertaken to ensure minimal disruption.

Although asbestos is a hazardous material, it can only pose a risk to health if the asbestos fibres become air borne and are then inhaled. Asbestos Containing Materials (ACMs) only release fibres into the air when they are disturbed. ACMs in a good, sealed condition and left undisturbed will not release fibres into the air and will not cause exposure and spread. SWS use controlled stripping techniques to reduce exposure and adhere to the Control of Asbestos regulations 2012 (CAR) and the Approved Code of Practice and Guidance (ACOPS).

The area containing the asbestos is sealed to make an enclosure and a negative air pressure unit fitted with HEPA filters is used to pull fresh air in to the enclosure as to not let asbestos fibres out into the surrounding environment. All waste removed is double bagged in asbestos bags ready for onward disposal to a licenced land fill site adhering  to the Hazardous Waste Regulations 2005.

SWS also hold a waste carriers licence, and can issue consignment notes for waste disposal.

Survey & Sampling

The Control of Asbestos Regulation 2012 (CAR) specifically Regulation 4, requires an employer to identify and manage asbestos within the work place. SWS will always give you the most cost effective and common sense solution to any asbestos that may be present in your building whether it is large commercial premises or smaller office and private dwellings.

We pride ourselves on our professional but user-friendly, easy to understand asbestos surveys and asbestos reports. All of our asbestos risk assessment and asbestos testing is carried out following the guidelines set out in Asbestos The Survey Guide HSG264.

We strongly advise to have the survey undertaken as early as possible in the process of your enquiry/project, as certain asbestos materials are categorised as licenced by the Health and Safety executive and this means that before asbestos removal can commence, a 14 day notification period is required along with formal notification of the works.

There are 3 types of survey:

  • Management
  • Refurbishment
  • Demolition

Management survey

Management surveys are standard surveys. Their purpose is to locate as far as is reasonably practicable, the presence and extent of any suspect asbestos containing materials (ACMs) in the building which could be damaged or disturbed during normal occupancy, including foreseeable maintenance and installation works, and to assess their condition.

Refurbishment and demolition surveys

Refurbishment and Demolition surveys are required before any refurbishment or demolition work can be carried out. This is a legal requirement under the Control of Asbestos regulations 2012 (CAR) and Construction, Design and Management regulations 2007. This type of survey is used to  locate and describe as far as is reasonably practicable, all ACMs in the area where the refurbishment work will take place, or in the whole building if demolition is planned. These surveys are fully intrusive and gain access to all areas, including those which may be difficult to reach.

Demolition

SWS can carry out all forms of demolition, either by hand or by machines. Our team of trained professionals offer a fully comprehensive service. Our demolition operatives work on both commercial and domestic properties, with no project to large or too small, for a client base including house developers, commercial industries, major retailers, government authorities and local councils. Our quality of work is substantiated through repeat business and long term relationships.

Based in Nottinghamshire and working nationwide, we provide comprehensive demolition services, with site clearance as either a standalone project or as part of the whole demolition process.

We manage our health, safety, environmental and quality assurance obligations through developed management systems which achieve a compliance level in excess of the minimum legislative requirements which govern the business.

To ensure continual improvement through review these well proven management systems are not only regularly audited internally, but also externally by auditors representing the professional bodies we belong to and by our trade association membership.
