Across Scotland, £737k of National Lottery funding was yesterday (WEDNESDAY 27 SEPTEMBER) shared between 98 community, arts and sports groups. Find out where funding has gone in your area by going to our list of awards

National Lottery Awards for All Scotland is the small grants programme making a big difference in communities up and down the country.

Thanks to an award of £2,000, Cowal Fiddle Workshop, based in Dunoon, will be able to arrange a programme of community concerts including performances in local care homes in the area.

Bill Carlow, Chairman, Cowal Fiddle Workshop, said, “This award means we can provide regular professional tuition ensuring that the fiddle players of Cowal can learn the correct techniques for playing and pass on their musical heritage to others.

“Our music brings great pleasure to many of the residents of our local care homes.  Music is a great awakener of past memories and many can recognise and enjoy the music of their youth even when other memories are fading.  With the help of funding from National Lottery Awards for All Scotland we are able to build on our expertise in playing the music of our cultural heritage and also bring it to the local community.”

Ferns Kitchen Catering CIC, based in Craigmiller in Edinburgh, will use their award of £9,983 to set up a community café based in Balfour House which provides sheltered housing for older people in the area.

Hazel Cornish, Director, Ferns Kitchen Catering CIC, said, “This award will make a big difference in helping us to tackle food inequalities for older people in Craigmiller. The money means we will be able to run a community café, set up lunch clubs and deliver affordable home made ready meals.

“Local young people will benefit as well as we will be able to offer training opportunities in catering and retail skills helping to give them vital work experience.”

Based in Bannockburn near Stirling, Square Peg SCIO, will run a digital arts programme for local young people with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) thanks to an award of £9,990. The project will culminate in a Film Festival where their work will be displayed.

Indie Flynn, Founder, Square Peg SCIO, said, “The difference that this award will make to us is so amazing that we are celebrating.  We can now deliver our workshops to more young people within central Scotland than would have been previously possible.

“We can now work towards educating more people about the unique gifts our young people give the world with our own animation and film festival.  All of this will be made possible thanks to National Lottery funding.”

A National Lottery Awards for All Scotland spokesperson yesterday said: “This is National Lottery money reaching into communities across Scotland making a real difference to the people who live there.

“Each of the 98 groups receiving a total of £737,262 today are fantastic examples of the range of projects that this small grants programme can fund.   It’s also clear whether it’s bringing live music to people in care homes in Dunoon, providing a delivery meal service for older people in Edinburgh or running workshops for children with ASD in Central Scotland,  that the smallest amounts of money can make a big difference.“
