Anfal Memorial Day 2020: Foreign Office statement

Middle East Minister James Cleverly marks the 32nd Anniversary of Saddam Hussein’s brutal assault against the Kurdish people in Iraq.

Minister for the Middle East and North Africa James Cleverly yesterday said:

Today marks the 32nd Anniversary of the Anfal Campaign – Saddam Hussein’s brutal assault against the Kurdish people in Iraq. In the course of the campaign, between 50,000-100,000 men, women and children were murdered, with many others driven from their homes as thousands of Kurdish villages and town were destroyed.

My thoughts today are with all those who lost loved ones in this tragedy.

The UK will continue to play its part in supporting the Kurdistan Region of Iraq to build a more peaceful, more prosperous future.
