British Transport Police officer sacked following IPCC investigation

An officer from British Transport Police (BTP) was dismissed from the force for gross misconduct last week following an IPCC investigation.

Police Constable Peter Crofts was filmed(link is external) striking Anthony Yeboah across the legs with a baton at King’s Cross St Pancras in March, 2016. An investigation by the IPCC found PC Crofts had a case to answer in respect of the allegations that his use of force may have been excessive.

On 24 March, he was sacked from BTP after a misconduct hearing found him guilty of breaching a range of professional standards including use of force and discreditable conduct.

An IPCC spokesman said:

“PC Crofts’ use of force was found by the panel to be excessive and unnecessary.

“Uses of force like this only serve to undermine confidence in policing, especially among the BME community, and we are pleased that both the panel and BTP agreed with our findings and have taken appropriate steps in dealing with this officer.”

The IPCC investigation report was published yesterday.
