CBI: Labour market enforcement strategy strikes good balance

The CBI has responded to the publication of the Labour Market Enforcement strategy, which sets out 37 recommendations to tackle exploitation of low-paid workers.

Labour market enforcement strategy strikes good balance

Matthew Fell, CBI UK Policy Director, said:

“Employers wholeheartedly agree that the UK’s successful labour market – a mainstay of our economy - must be both flexible and fair.

“Overall, the Director of Labour Market Enforcement’s strategy strikes a good balance - investing in helping firms understand their legal duties should always be the first step to ensuring high compliance, and it is right that firms who flout the law are punished.

“Recent CBI research found that 95% of firms support improved enforcement of labour market rules, which is the right thing to do and promotes fair competition.

“Businesses also support introducing measures such as a statement of rights and itemised payslips for all workers.

“As ever, implementation is key. While companies support asking the Employment Agencies Standards Inspectorate to regulate umbrella companies and intermediaries, concerns remain regarding its ability to enforce agency worker regulations concurrently.”
