Electric charging network expands
Hundreds of rapid charge points capable of powering electric vehicles in 30 minutes are set to be installed across the Capital.
The new breed of charge points will power vehicles much faster than the three-to-four hours it currently takes when using a standard unit.
TfL is investing £18million in the scheme in the hope that more drivers will be encouraged to ditch polluting vehicles in favour of environmentally friendly electric models.
The first rapid charging points will be up and running in a couple of months, with 75 by the end of the year and 300 by 2020.
TfL's Director of Surface Strategy and Planning, Ben Plowden, said: 'Urgent action needs to be taken to clean up London's toxic air and rid the Capital of the most polluting vehicles. An extensive rapid charging network is fundamental in helping drivers make the shift from fossil fuels to electric.
'This is particularly important for the taxi and private hire trades and the fleet and freight sector, which over the next few years will be looking to dramatically increase the number of journeys made with zero exhaust emissions'.
