Giving a voice to diverse young women

Girl Dreamer is inspiring young women from diverse backgrounds to produce videos and a spoken word performance in Birmingham.

Girl Dreamer, an organisation which educates, elevates and empowers women, is creating awareness and tackling issues that affect young Black and ethnic minority women in the UK through their new project: Stereotypes Socials & Sisterhood. This project is supported by £9,000 from the National Lottery, through the Grant for the Arts scheme.

Stereotypes Socials & Sisterhood

Girl Dreamer will create graphic animation videos highlighting the voice of diverse girls and women aged between 13 and 28 nationwide. Their words, experiences and opinions will become a part of a series of videos which will be shared in an online gallery and across social media to create awareness of everyday issues faced by young Black and ethnic minority women.

These videos will be brought to life in a spoken word performance, featuring five female spoken word artists, including Aliyah Holder and Rupinder Kaur, at Impact Hub, Birmingham in December 2017.

Peter Knott, Area Director, Arts Council England said: “Girl Dreamer is providing a powerful platform for diverse young women to share their stories and it’s important that people from all walks of life can express themselves through art and culture. We’re delighted to be supporting this project that promises audiences an insight into the challenges they face and the opportunity to hear their stories first hand.”
