How are housing providers responding to migrant destitution across England?
The Strategic Alliance on Migrant Destitution takes a look at good practice examples from across the sector around housing destitute migrants.
With so much of the media dominated by the plight of vulnerable refugees and migrants in far countries, it can be easy to forget that there are individuals on the streets of the UK who are in desperate need of support. Migrant destitution and the vulnerable housing of those trapped by an ineffective asylum system remains a serious issue among communities across the country. Provision of housing for migrants who are going through complicated and lengthy immigration cases can be a significant challenge. Many destitute migrants struggle to receive support from local authorities and many mainstream homeless services.
However, some housing providers are providing unique and innovative accommodation models in partnership with migrant services. Homeless Link has been collecting case studies of these models as part of our work hosting the Strategic Alliance on Migrant Destitution (SAMD). This is a national project, hosted by Homeless Link, which brings together organisations from across the housing, homeless and migrant sectors to find pathways out of destitution for vulnerable migrants.
We have recently published our collection of case studies to illustrate some of the approaches that housing providers are taking across England. These include close partnerships with migrant and homelessness agencies, providing organisations with maintenance support and challenging the perception that destitute migrants cannot be housed. This good practice guide is part of the Migrant Destitution Toolkit, which brings together a set of free online resources, good practice guides and briefings in order to develop pathways out of destitution for non-EEA destitute migrants.
