IOPC investigation after woman dies following collision with Warwickshire Police car

We are carrying out an investigation into a fatal collision between a marked police car and woman which happened in Bedworth, Warwickshire at around midday on Wednesday 23rd January 2019.

The collision took place close to the Griffin public house on Coventry Road, in between Bedworth and Nuneaton, near to the A444.

The woman who died is Jessie Whitehead, 74, who lived in Bedworth. She was riding a mobility scooter at the time of the collision. Police officers gave first aid at the scene prior to the arrival of paramedics. She was taken to hospital by road ambulance but sadly she died in hospital on Wednesday evening.

We have established that the double-crewed police car was responding to an emergency call about a reported road safety hazard in the area.

After being notified by Warwickshire Police, we sent investigators to the scene and police post incident procedure where initial witness accounts from officers involved have been gathered. We will be reviewing any relevant CCTV from nearby.

IOPC Regional Director, Derrick Campbell, said: “We have begun an investigation into the circumstances of this tragic collision. I send my sympathies to the family and friends of Jessie Whitehead and everyone affected by the sad events.

"We have made contact with her family to explain our role. We will be speaking to a small number of members of the public who we know were at the scene, but if anyone else witnessed the collision we would be grateful if they came forward.”

Witnesses can contact the IOPC on 0800 029 4693 or email: witness@policeconduct.gov.uk
