IOPC launches independent investigation after Wembley fatal road crash

We have begun an independent investigation into the circumstances of a crash in Wembley, north-west London in which a man has died.

We were notified by the Metropolitan Police that at around 11.20pm on Wednesday 1 April in The Avenue, London HA9, the police had followed a dark blue Audi car after it had sped past in front of them at traffic lights.

Shortly afterwards, the vehicle collided with a tree and the driver died at the scene.

At this time there is no indication that there were any other vehicles involved.

Our investigators monitored the post-incident procedures, where the officers involved gave their initial accounts, and monitored the investigation of the collision scene, to provide independent oversight.

Our thoughts are with the man’s family and all of those affected.
