IOPC witness appeal after Nottinghamshire Police incident

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is appealing for witnesses as it investigates the use of force by police during an incident in Nottingham.

Officers were called to a disturbance in Sneinton at around 10.30pm on Saturday, 3 February (2018) and arrested a 44-year-old man at the junction of Devon Street and Carlton Road.

The man was driven in a police van to Bridewell Police Station and during his detention he was taken for treatment at the Queen’s Medical Centre where it was found that he had head injuries including a fractured cheek.

Following a referral from Nottinghamshire Police the IOPC is now investigating the circumstances of the man’s arrest, including the use of force, and subsequent detention.

IOPC investigators are carrying out house-to-house enquiries today (Wednesday 28 February) to identify witnesses and have asked anyone who saw the incident during which the man was arrested to contact them on 0800 029 4693 or email sneinston@policeconduct.gov.uk.

IOPC investigators have begun to gather evidence including CCTV and body worn video footage.

IOPC Regional Director Derrick Campbell said: “Given the nature and extent of the man’s injuries we have a duty to independently investigate all the circumstances. This incident took place in a residential area and we would ask anyone who saw or recorded what happened to come forward and help us with our investigation.”

The man who was arrested was convicted of possessing a pointed article when he appeared before Nottingham magistrates on 6 February and was given a 12-week prison sentence suspended for a year.
