IPCC to carry out independent investigation after fatal road traffic incident in Merseyside

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) has begun an independent investigation following a fatal road traffic incident at around 8:40am on Sunday 22 October in Bebington, Wirral.

A suspected stolen Vauxhall Vectra crashed on Bebington Road while heading towards Birkenhead. The two men occupying the car were taken to hospital. Mr Brendan Griffin aged 21, died on Monday evening after being treated for his injuries, a second man aged 26 remains in a stable condition in hospital.

Following a referral from Merseyside Police, IPCC investigators were deployed to the scene on Sunday. The IPCC investigation will look at the actions of Merseyside Police prior to the collision. All police officers involved are currently being treated as witnesses.

Merseyside Police is carrying out an investigation into allegations that the car was stolen.
