IPCC witness appeal after teenager arrested in Burton upon Trent

The IPCC wants to trace people who filmed or photographed the arrest of a teenage girl in Burton upon Trent in Staffordshire.

The girl was arrested when Staffordshire Police responded to an incident in Princess Street on Bank Holiday Monday, 1 May, between 7pm and 8pm. Pepper spray was discharged by officers after a crowd of onlookers gathered.

The IPCC is now investigating the police interaction with the girl following a referral from the force. IPCC Operations Manager Stephen Bimson said that police body worn footage showed that several bystanders had recorded or photographed the incident on their mobile phones.

He said: “To ensure that our independent investigation is as thorough as possible we would appeal to anyone who has footage or photographs, or knows someone who has, to get in touch with us as soon as possible.”

IPCC investigators have visited Princess Street this week to put up appeal notices.
