Investigation begins after film of MPS officer striking protestor

We are investigating the conduct of a Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) officer filmed striking a man during a political protest.

Footage of the incident, which took place on Sunday 4 February in Wood Green, north London, was shared on social media and has since attracted coverage nationally.

The MPS voluntarily referred the incident and on Friday 9 February an independentinvestigation was launched.

IOPC Regional Director for London, Jonathan Green, said: “The incident captured on camera at the rally has raised concerns from the media and the public.

“It is important that a robust independent investigation is conducted to maintain confidence in the police complaints system.

“We will be investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and looking at whether the force used by the officer was appropriate.

“We are keen to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident, which took place during a rally on Wood Green High Road. We are also keen to receive any footage that may have been recorded of the incident”
