Investigation launched after man dies at Stevenage custody suite

The IPCC has launched an independent investigation following the death of a man taken into police custody.

Luigi Basile, 48, was arrested at 1.48pm Thursday 14 September by Hertfordshire Constabulary officers in St Albans on suspicion he had broken a criminal behaviour order.

He was taken to Stevenage Custody Suite where he became unwell and the ambulance service was called. Tragically he died.

Hertfordshire Constabulary referred the incident to the IPCC and investigators were deployed to the scene, attended post-incident procedure and are identifying CCTV evidence and witnesses.

IPCC Commission delegate Colin Dewar said: “This is a tragic incident in which a man in police custody has died. My thoughts go out to Mr Basile’s family and friends and all involved in this terrible incident.”
