Man dies in custody following arrest by Kent Police officers

An independent investigation has been launched after a man died in police custody in Tonbridge, Kent on Friday 13 October.

The 29-year-old man had been arrested at about 3pm following allegations of a domestic incident on 1 October.

While in custody at Tonbridge Police Station the man collapsed. South East Coast Ambulance Service and the air ambulance service were called and medical assistance provided but at 5.45pm the man was declared dead.

The IPCC were informed and investigators were deployed to the scene and post incident procedures. Officers have provided accounts, a CCTV trawl has been made of the area where the man was arrested and investigators are assessing CCTV footage recovered from the police station.

The man’s next of kin have been informed and the IPCC will provide them with updates on the investigation throughout. At this stage all officers are being treated as witnesses.
