NHS Confederation - Focus must be on preventing Covid-19 in learning disability settings

Sean Duggan, chief executive of the Mental Health Network, which is part of the NHS Confederation, responded to the CQC's publication of data on deaths of people with a learning disability

“We must prioritise and protect the most vulnerable in our society. Every one of these deaths is a tragic loss of life.

“Mental health and learning disability providers are working tirelessly to ensure the safety of their patients and this data is a welcome, if overdue, contribution to the evidence base.

“Our focus must be on preventing the virus in learning disability settings; services must have access to adequate PPE and testing in recognition of the inherent risks within these environments.

“It is vital that the NHS guidance for phase 3 of this pandemic has a strong focus on the particular safeguarding needs of people with learning disabilities.”
