NHS Confederation - ONS findings show toll of pandemic on mental wellbeing

Sean Duggan, chief executive of the Mental Health Network, which is part of the NHS Confederation, commented on the ONS findings on the impact of lockdown on mental health and wellbeing

“These findings demonstrate once again the heavy toll the COVID emergency is taking on people’s mental wellbeing.

“Figures from the Centre for Mental Health suggest 10 million people will need either new or additional mental health support as a direct consequence of this crisis and the consequent economic downturn. Those with existing mental health conditions will be particularly vulnerable. Adequate early support will help reduce the risk of mental health issues worsening.

“While the introduction of mental health practitioners in Primary Care Networks from April will help to improve primary mental health care and strengthen existing links with secondary care, there continue to be high levels of staff burnout and exhaustion, as well as vacancies across the mental health workforce, and we need guaranteed long-term investment for growing the mental health workforce.”
