NHS Confederation - Preparing for Brexit: leading health and social care organisations discuss risks and how to address them

Yesterday, a meeting of influential health and social care leaders was brought together by the Welsh NHS Confederation to discuss with the Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Services, Vaughan Gething, and the Minister for Children, Older People and Social Care, Huw Irranca-Davies, the immediate Brexit risks to the NHS and social services and how to address them.

Many aspects of the UK’s health and social care services have been influenced by European Union policies and legislation and whatever the Brexit settlement there will be implications for the workforce, medical supplies, public health and research and innovation and many others.

While the UK Government continues to negotiate the terms of our withdrawal from the EU we must also prepare for a no deal scenario. We need to work with Welsh Government so that NHS and social care organisations in Wales can take action to ensure patients and social care clients continue to receive the services, medicines and care they need post Brexit.

Vanessa Young, Director of the Welsh NHS Confederation said:

“Whatever the outcome of the Brexit negotiations, we want to ensure that as far as possible our patients, clients and our workforce are protected from any negative consequences. Today’s event is an opportunity for NHS and social care leaders to discuss the risks and the key priorities as well as what is being done at a national, regional and local level to address them.

"We look forward to discussing with the Cabinet Secretary and the Minister the actions being taken by the UK and Welsh Governments to ensure that Wales is ready for EU withdrawal. We need to ensure our planning for Brexit is coordinated and comprehensive, starting with understanding what action is being taken nationally across Wales and the UK.

"We will be asking Ministers to establish a Ministerial Stakeholder Reference Group to help develop and coordinate health and social care preparations for EU withdrawal across Wales. The aim today is to share our combined expertise and insight better to plan and work together over the coming months.”

Health Secretary, Vaughan Gething said:

“As the UK Government reaches a critical point in its Brexit negotiations, today is an opportunity for representatives from across the health and social services sector to discuss our joint preparations.

“Unfortunately, we are in a position where we must responsibly plan for a ‘no deal’ Brexit, and proactively address the risks this poses to the future of health and social care, staff and patients. Today is about sharing the progress made so far, and what those within the sector believe needs to be done to minimise the impact of Brexit. It is about learning from each other and working together to ensure patients continue to receive the health, care and support they need.”
