NHS Confederation - Survey ‘chilling reminder’ of need to overhaul how social care funded

Dr Layla McCay, a director at the NHS Confederation, which represents organisations across the healthcare sector, responded to the ADASS Budget Survey Part 2: Impact of Covid on Budgets

“The Government promised that it would give care homes and other services everything they need to get through coronavirus and this report shows that it has failed. Not only are providers struggling to make ends meet, only 4% of the adult social care directors surveyed were confident that they have enough money to meet their legal responsibilities – down from 35% last year. This should serve as a chilling reminder of the need to drastically overhaul how social care is funded and supported in England.

“Everyone in the NHS is already working incredibly hard to treat people affected by Covid-19, restart services safely, and start to manage the huge backlog of treatment that has built up – all while facing new and pre-existing financial, workforce, and many other challenges. If social care collapses, the NHS will be overwhelmed and the effects could be devastating. We cannot afford for that to happen.

“The pandemic has presented all of us with a unique opportunity to reset how health and care is funded and delivered – we have to seize it.”
