New plan announced to advance gender equality in Wales

“Creating a more equal Wales underpins all we do” Deputy Minister and Chief Whip Jane Hutt said yesterday as she published new plans to advance gender equality in Wales.

The Advancing Gender Equality in Wales Plan outlines the Welsh Government’s vision to ensure a gender equal Wales means an equal sharing of power, resources and influence for all women, men and non-binary people.

This work will cut across all parts of policymaking, including health, education and poverty. Examples of work that will underpin these plans over the next three years include -

  • a review of shared parental leave and maternity
  • development of a period poverty strategic plan
  • employment pension review into gender inequalities
  • Increase diversity in public appointments.

Deputy Minister, Jane Hutt yesterday said,

We are determined to address these inequalities with the recommendations of the Gender Equality Review.

International Women’s Day on March 8th has once again highlighted the need for us to take urgent action to deliver equality for women across every policy area we are responsible for. I wholeheartedly support the United Nation’s Convention on the Elimination of all forms of discrimination against Women (CEDAW) and I’m working to incorporate this into our policies and laws.

I’m proud to say that the Welsh Government is determined to rise to this challenge and will do everything in its power to ensure equality for all.
