Publication of Government Response: The future of the Probation Service

The Justice Committee has published the Government’s response to its report into the future of the Probation Service.

The Justice Committee has published the Government’s response to its report into the future of the Probation Service.

In its report, published in April, the Committee welcomed the re-unification of the Probation Service but warned that after years of disruption it was important that any changes were well planned, fully-funded and designed for the long-term. It also warned that historic low staffing levels in the service would have to be tackled if rehabilitation support for those leaving prison was to improve.

The Government announced further details of its plans for the Unified Probation Service on 28 June. The Government has now provided its full response to the Committee’s report.
