Revealing the real magic of pantomime
As pantomime season gets into full swing, stars from stage and screen are celebrating the importance of Christmas programming for local theatres and communities across the country.
More than just a theatrical tradition, pantomime weaves its magic through towns and cities nationwide – fostering a love of creativity and culture in people of all ages and backgrounds. Performer, and this year’s Pop Act BRIT Award winner, JADE cites her annual trip to The Customs House Pantomimes in South Shields as her “most favourite memories as a child” and credits them for “igniting a spark” for her stage career.
“They hold some of my most favourite memories as a child. They ignited a spark in me to want to be on stage.“
- JADE
JADE recently commented:
“The Pantomimes at The Customs House, South Shields, were my introduction to theatre and showbiz. They hold some of my most favourite memories as a child. They ignited a spark in me to want to be on stage. It was tradition to go on my birthday on Boxing Day, and so I saw each pantomime as a milestone in my life, a time where I’d be surrounded by love, with my family by my side, of all ages, laughing together. It taught me the importance of community spirit, showing up every year for a show that is so necessary for many people’s joy, especially for those who might otherwise not have had much of it that time of year. And to never forget where you’ve come from.”

Attracting almost three million people to theatres every year, Pantomime is a tradition for some families, and often the first live theatrical experience for many children. This early experience is what led JADE to become the performer she is today. Showing children from a young age that there are fulfilling careers on and off the stage in the creative industries, is vital to securing the futures of our treasured local theatres across the country.
