Sign of the times

As Britain celebrates Deaf Awareness Week this week, four station staff have been learning sign language so they can help hearing-impaired passengers in London.

Mike Norris, Simone Jordan, Nana Mills and Jason Davis went to Westminster station to meet Asif Iqbal MBE, President of the Harrow & Barnet Deaf Club, who taught them some specific travel terms they could use on the concourse.

They also mastered general greetings such as good morning, good evening and welcome. The president congratulated them on their enthusiasm and abilities and said: 'I am pleased to see the drive and dedication from Transport for London in making sure that any form of communication barriers can be removed.

'By providing deaf awareness training, it enables members of staff to communicate directly with deaf customers, helping them have full access to all the transport services in the Capital including buses, Tubes and London Overground trains.'
