TUC: Government must take the lead on new global protections for workers

TUC General Secretary Frances O’Grady, commented on the ILO (International Labour Organisation) move to pass new international standards on protecting people in work

“People at work should be safe from violence and harassment.

“The agreement is a crucial step forward to guarantee basic protections throughout the world of work.

“The government should take the lead on this and ratify it as soon as possible – to ensure that every worker is protected.”

Editors note

  • The convention protects all groups who are at risk of violence, prompting a burden on governments to legislate to protect anyone who is vulnerable.
  • This is the first convention agreed at the ILO since 2011, in the ILO’s 100th year.

  • The Trades Union Congress (TUC) exists to make the working world a better place for everyone. We bring together more than 5.5 million working people who make up our 48 member unions. We support unions to grow and thrive, and we stand up for everyone who works for a living.
