Thames Valley Police officers cleared over their conduct prior to the death of Aston McLean Williams

Officers serving with Thames Valley Police (TVP) have been cleared of allegations of gross misconduct following a disciplinary hearing held after an IPCC investigation launched after the death of Aston McLean Williams.

Aston died following a collision with a police vehicle in Reading in the early hours of 6 August 2014.

The IPCC’s investigation was completed in January 2016 and the final report was referred to TVP, HM Coroner and the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).

The IPCC was informed by the CPS in August 2016 that there was insufficient evidence to bring criminal charges against the officers.

Family members exercised their right to a review of the decision and in April 2017 the CPS confirmed the officers would not face charges.

TVP agreed with the opinion of the IPCC investigator that there was sufficient evidence a misconduct panel could find that the police constable driving the police car and a second constable who was in close proximity to Aston, committed gross misconduct through their actions.

The hearing, which concluded last Friday, found that the two officers, referred to as Officer N and Officer P did not commit gross misconduct.

An inquest into Aston’s death has yet to be scheduled.
