The NHS Alliance - Demand rises across the NHS as leaders work hard to treat patients and tackle corridor care
Matthew Hopkins, interim acute and ambulance network director at The NHS Alliance, responded to the latest NHS performance figures and corridor care data
“While the publication of new corridor care data is welcome, it is very concerning that NHS leaders and their teams are being left with little choice but to treat patients in corridors and other temporary and inappropriate spaces in hospitals. This is unsafe and undignified for patients and their families, and leaders across health and social care are working hard to eradicate the issue.
“While health leaders continue to work on tackling the root causes of corridor care and clear backlogs across the service, they will be concerned that the upcoming wave of industrial action could threaten to jeopardise their hard work.
“Elsewhere, NHS leaders and their teams continue to work flat out to treat patients, keep them safe and deliver services in the face of rising demand across the NHS.
“Urgent and emergency care remains under severe pressure with a record all-time high for A&E attendances. Ambulance call outs are also highest on record for any May.
“NHS leaders and the teams have also been working hard to clear the waiting list backlog - which now stands at over 7 million, and it is welcome to see that 65 per cent of patients were waiting less than 18 weeks for elective treatment.”
