The World Stage: why international exchange is critical to the arts

Our Chair, Sir Nicholas Serota, gives a speech on the importance of global collaboration and we launch a new report on international opportunities for UK arts and culture.

Speaking at the Creative Industries Federation’s first international conference yesterday, Sir Nicholas said that Britain has benefited economically and culturally from artists, writers and thinkers who have come from abroad. He said:

Cultures that cut themselves off… ultimately stagnate and are irrelevant to a changing world.

Sir Nicholas told an audience of more than 600 that, irrespective of the negotiation to leave the EU, we should secure the right conditions for artists and other creatives from Europe and across the world to move and practice. He said:

This is fundamental to international exchange and has become a cornerstone for the creative economy in the UK.

The conference brought together high-level speakers from politics, economics, science, tech and the creative sector.
