Two Met Police officers charged following Wimbledon shooting

Two Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) officers will appear before Westminster Magistrates’ Court on 25 November charged with grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent, and with attempted GBH with intent, relating to an armed police operation in Wimbledon in 2018, in which a 23-year-old man was shot.

The charges follow our investigation.

We examined the circumstances surrounding the shooting during a pre-planned operation in Haydons Road, Wimbledon, on 3 December 2018 which resulted in a man being taken to hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

We concluded our investigation in November 2019 and in January 2020 referred a file of evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service, which has now authorised the charges.

Officer NX1 has been charged with unlawfully wounding with intent contrary to Section 18, Offences Against the Person Act 1861.

Officer MY55 has been charged with attempted unlawful wounding with intent contrary to Section 1(1), Criminal Attempts Act 1981.

* The officers cannot be named to avoid prejudicing a related ongoing prosecution in which they will be giving evidence as NX1 and MY55.
