Update following death of man arrested in Nottingham

A man who died following his arrest in the Carlton area of Nottingham has been named as Cain Hargreaves.

We are investigating the interaction between Mr Hargreaves, 21, and police during and after his arrest in Southdale Road at about 10pm on Friday 5 January.

Officers had responded to an earlier report of a road traffic incident there, which is the subject of a separate investigation by Nottinghamshire Police. After becoming unwell in a police vehicle and being transferred to an ambulance outside the Church of the Sacred Heart on Carlton Hill at around 10.30pm, Mr Hargreaves was pronounced dead in hospital later that evening.

After being notified by the force, our investigators attended the scene and police post incident procedures. Investigators have since completed a CCTV trawl locally and gathered relevant information including police logs. Initial statements from officers involved have been obtained. IOPC investigators carried out house to house enquiries last week.

A post mortem examination carried out on Saturday 6 January was unable to establish a cause of death and the results of further tests are awaited.

Investigators have met Mr Hargreaves’ family to explain how the investigation will progress.

IOPC Regional Director, Derrick Campbell, said: “It is essential when someone dies in the custody of the police that all of the circumstances surrounding their death are independently and rigorously investigated. Our investigation will thoroughly examine the evidence we gather to help establish what happened. I would again express my condolences to Cain’s family, friends and everyone else affected. We are still keen to speak to any witnesses to the interaction with police that evening.”

An inquest was opened and adjourned on Monday 22 January by HM Coroner for Nottingham.
