Update on investigation into death of man in south London
We are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the death of a man on 31 March following his arrest by Metropolitan Police (MPS) officers and detention at Walworth custody suite in south London.
Oghene Abboh, 26, and from Camberwell, was arrested by officers shortly before 11.30am on Friday 30 March in Southwark, South London and he was taken to Walworth Custody Suite. An ambulance was called a short time later, as a precautionary measure, as officers believed he may have swallowed something. He was taken to hospital, arriving at approximately 12.15pm.
We understand that his condition deteriorated after arrival at the hospital and Mr Abboh died the following morning (Saturday 31 March).
Our investigators have obtained statements from the officers involved in the arrest and those at the police station. We are reviewing body-worn video footage from officers and also CCTV footage showing Mr Abboh’s movements and time in custody.
A post-mortem has been conducted but the cause of death has yet to be determined and further tests are being undertaken. An inquest into Mr Abboh’s death has also been opened and we will supply our investigation report to HM Coroner once completed.
We have made contact with Mr Abboh’s family to inform them of our role and will be keeping them updated throughout our investigation.
IOPC Regional Director Jonathan Green said:
“The death of Oghene is a tragic incident and I extend my sympathies to his family, friends and all those affected.
“Our independent investigation will be carefully examining his interaction with the police that day to help understand the circumstances in which he lost his life.”
