Our joint Annual Report and Accounts for the year ending 31 March 2018 has now been published, and will be the last for the current Auditor General before he retires. It shows that, thanks to the professionalism, dedication and hard work of Wales Audit Office staff, we successfully delivered our broad programme of work to a high quality standard.

We achieved the majority of our performance targets for the year and made substantial progress on our longer-term priorities for transforming the way we run our business and delivering our audit programme.

Alongside our financial statements, the report provides an analysis of our performance and demonstrates our compliance with good corporate governance. Highlights included:

• 97% of auditors’ recommendations fully accepted for implementation
• £16m of potential savings identified through our audit work
• 100% of audits delivered in accordance with quality standards
• A real terms reduction of 13% in our expenditure since 2013-14.

A selection of case studies has also been included in the Report to give more insight on some of the projects that we have been involved with, and the significant impact that our work has had.

The Auditor General for Wales, Huw Vaughan Thomas said:

“This year we have once again provided a productive, professional and high quality programme of audit work. It is positive to see a number of innovative case studies that highlight the significant contribution we make to the public sector in Wales. I am also pleased to see the continued progress made on our long-term priorities of transformation. We have made great strides in our pilot work for auditing the Well-being of Future Generations work and focusing on strengthening our external engagement.”

Chair of the Wales Audit Office, Isobel Garner said:

It is positive to see that the Wales Audit Office has committed to continual transformational change and been willing to take up the challenge set by the Board.
