Wales Office Minister praises "inspiring" Urdd Eisteddfod

Wales Office minister Guto Bebb yesterday hailed the warm reception that the Urdd Eisteddfod has received in Flintshire and cited it as evidence that the Welsh language is appreciated and supported across the whole country.

Speaking on a visit to the Urdd National Eisteddfod, one of Europe’s largest youth festivals, Mr Bebb said that it is incredibly important that schoolchildren from all parts of Wales can take part in events that promote Welsh culture and the Welsh language.

Mr Bebb also used the visit as an opportunity to meet the organisers, watch some of the events, and reinforce the UK Government’s commitment to supporting the Welsh language.

Mr Bebb said:

For many years, the Urdd Eisteddfod has inspired generations of young people to embrace the Welsh language and our rich cultural identity. During the course of this Eisteddfod in Flint schoolchildren from all parts of Wales will take part and compete. It will be an experience that they will remember all their lives.

I am delighted that local people in Flint and the County of Flintshire have provided such a warm welcome to the Urdd and wish it every success. I am confident that the many non-Welsh speakers in the local area will have enjoyed being part of the experience and thank them for their incredible support for the 2016 Urdd Eisteddfod.
