West Midlands Police officer to appear in court charged with assaults

A serving West Midlands Police officer is due to appear in court charged with two assaults and attempting to pervert the course of justice.

The charges are in connection with an incident which happened following the arrest of two women after a disturbance near the bus station in Halesowen on 22 December last year (2017).

We began our investigation following a referral from West Midlands Police in early January and submitted a file to the Crown Prosecution Service last month (June).

After reviewing the evidence the CPS authorised two charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm against police constable Kevin McClenaghan. The officer faces a further charge of attempting to pervert the course of justice, which relates to the completion of a witness statement arising from the same incident.

Pc McClenaghan will make his first appearance before Birmingham Magistrates Court tomorrow (Thursday 19 July).
