Removing barriers and improving disability data

Blog posted by: , 03 December 2021 – Categories: a great place to workInternational Day of Persons with a Disability.

I started working for MoJ in 1993 as an AA/Band F and am now a G6, I have had a variety of operational and corporate HQ roles. I stayed because I loved what I was doing and I can honestly say my physical disability has never been a barrier.

I can’t say I am comfortable in my own skin and may never be and coupled with not wanting to stand out or be labelled. I didn’t declare my disability on HR systems for about 20 years but I have come to realise that ‘ what gets measured gets done' so I would encourage you to update your HR profile. As Co-Lead of the D&T D&I forum, I have had access to the diversity and inclusion data and there is room for improvement.

Having a disability is not a barrier to employment or retaining employment. Providing reasonable workplace adjustments for those who need them removes barriers and helps staff to thrive in their work.

I recently attended a brilliant training course and the image that stuck with me is simple yet very powerful.

In D&T we are committed to making positive changes to how we attract, recruit, retain and develop people with disabilities. This is part of our wider work towards creating a disability inclusive organisation where everyone can thrive, feel included, and know they belong.
