Museum, Devon
78yrs old (Cullompton, Devon)
She has been
instrumental in the continuing success and upkeep of Coldharbour
Working Wool Museum. Her association with the museum began in
1990, when she became a member of the mill's support group,
Friends of Coldharbour Mill. In 1995 she became its Chair, and has
led a series of changes and improvements. Built in 1799 by Thomas
Fox, Coldharbour Mill is Devon's last surviving spinning mill
from the Georgian era. It still continues today to produce both
worsted and woollen knitting yarns and the mill also weaves its
own cloths including the popular Devon, Somerset and Blackdown
Hills Tartans. Coldharbour Mill has been a registered museum and
charity since 1982 and is both a unique piece of social and
industrial history and a popular tourist attraction. She is
responsible for over 100 volunteers who form a strong, efficient
and dedicated group to run the mill. In 2004 she led the
fundraising to restore the mill's 1821 water wheel. When
completed in 2005, it was the only wheel in Britain still
operating in-situ, in its original wheelhouse. She has led the
introduction of a number of exhibitions including Fox Exhibition
Gallery, the Culm Valley Millennium Screen, the Carpenter's
Workshop and 1940s Air Raid Shelter, which have all brought
history to life in the mill. In addition to her work with the
mill, she is also a churchwarden at St Mary's Church in
Burlescombe, a post she has held for over six years.
