‘Richard Parks an inspiration’, says Welsh Secretary

The Welsh Secretary tyesteray said that Richard Parks should be acknowledged as an ambassador for young people and charities, following his world-record breaking charity challenge.

Today, Richard Parks completed the 737 challenge, an epic fund-raising challenge in aid of Marie Curie Cancer Care which saw him climb the North and South Poles and reach the summits of Kilimanjaro and Everest before finishing the challenge at Russia’s Mount Elbrus (the world’s highest mountain).

Cheryl Gillan met Mr. Park earlier in the year at Gwydyr House in London, before he set off on his expedition to climb seven summits on each continent– becoming the first person in history to stand on three poles in the same calendar year.

Mrs. Gillan said: “Richard Parks has completed an epic journey which would push even the most dedicated of athletes to the very edges of human endurance.  With perseverance and determination he has overcome some very challenging and punishing conditions in order to improve the lives of others.

“He is a wonderful ambassador for Wales and a true inspiration for young people.  I am delighted that Marie Curie Cancer Care will benefit from Richard’s expedition and I am delighted at what he has achieved.  I hope to meet him again soon to congratulate him on his success in person”
