Jane, Mrs. Green For charitable services in
West Sussex
64 yrs old (HAYWARDS HEATH, WEST SUSSEX)
She
has been a valued member of the British Heart Foundation (BHF),
particularly the Mid-Sussex branch, since it was founded 26 years
ago. She lost her son to heart disease 21 years ago but rather
than become dejected with life, she resolved to help other people
within her community especially those with heart disease, disabled
and the elderly people through her kindness, being supportive and
fundraising. She became the Chair of the BHF Mid-Sussex branch in
1985, leading with enthusiasm, dedication and inspiration. She
raised the profile of the branch to one of the best performing
branches in the South East. She has initiated a variety of
fundraising activities including a sponsored horse ride, which now
attracts about 200 horses, raising £10,000 a year and a sponsored
charity walk, which has grown over the last 16 years to over 300
entrants, raising £18,000. The branch recently presented medical
equipment to the cardiac unit of the Royal Sussex County Hospital
in Brighton. Through her dedication and leadership, the branch has
raised a total of £500,000 since it was established. She has also
been a volunteer on the committee of the West Sussex Association
for the Disabled for the past 11 years. She regularly visits
elderly and disabled people in their homes and organises outings.

Mr. Martin Anderson For services to the Motor Neurone Disease
Association
60 yrs old (KEYWORTH, NOTTINGHAMSHIRE)
He
joined forces with a handful of volunteers in Nottingham in 1979
from which the Motor Neurone Disease Association emerged. Back
then few people had heard of Motor Neurone Disease (MND), and even
fewer knew anything about it. Thanks to him and his fellow
pioneers, the MND Association took its first few steps to becoming
the multi-million pound national support and research charity it
is today. As a founder member, his commitment to the association
has been steadfast since those early days. As well as remaining
deeply involved with the Nottinghamshire Branch, he served as a
trustee for almost 20 years. As a trustee, he brought a strong
interest in patient care, along with experience in finance and
general management. He also fundraised for the association,
including running the London Marathon in 1985, and was a
scrupulous guardian of its hard earned income and investments.
There is no doubt that his selfless sacrifice, devotion and
dedication has played a big part in the association's huge
expansion over the past 27 years in serving sufferers' need,
financing meaningful medical research and raising public awareness.
Mr. George Baker
Mr. Charles Barnes
Mr. Graham Bow
Mr. John Carpenter For services to Disabled People in
Cornwall
87 yrs old (FALMOUTH, CORNWALL)
He has been an
active member of Remap since 1983 and was one of a small group of
men who successfully re-launched the charity in 1989. The unique
work of this charity brings together the skills of professional
engineers and craftsmen to custom design and make equipment for
disabled persons, free of charge, which are not available
commercially or through the health services. When he retired as a
trustee, after 13 years, in recognition of his long service he was
made Vice-President. He continues to be an enthusiastic and
committed member and supporter through his work with the local
Panel in Cornwall. Like other members of the Panels he designs and
makes the one-off aids which Remap exists to provide, to assist
clients for whom there is no suitable device available
commercially. Over and above this, he gives presentations about
Remap and its work to local organisations, and thus helps raise
people's awareness and to come forward as clients or as
volunteer Panel members. His background in mechanical and
electrical engineering has been invaluable and at the age of 87 he
is still giving his services as a professional engineer and
spreading the word about Remap and its functions for the local community.

Mr. Ronald Murrell For services to Disadvantaged People in
Merseyside
64 yrs old (LIVERPOOL, MERSEYSIDE)
He has a 24
year long career in the mental health and drugs field, and is held
in high regard by clients, fellow health and social care
professionals, and wider partner agencies across Merseyside. He
has come to prominence through the Drugs Intervention Programme
and stands out amongst peers in his field nationally as having
made extraordinary contributions to health and well-being. He
worked as a staff nurse, a community psychiatric nurse and a
clinical nurse manger before managing the Kevin White Unit, an
in-patient residential detoxification unit on Merseyside. As
co-ordination manager for the Merseyside Arrest Referral Scheme,
he developed highly essential and productive working relationships
with a variety of key partner agencies - the police, NHS,
probation service, local authority, voluntary organisations and
service providers. As Drug Interventions Programme Manager in
Sefton, he oversaw the highly successful development of the
programme locally in Merseyside and has acted and continues to act
as an excellent ambassador at a national level. His dedication to
improving the lives of those affected by substance misuse is
outstanding and abundantly evident, as is his personal commitment
to the involvement of users and carers in the planning,
commissioning and evaluation of services to some of the most hard
to reach groups in our communities.
