Important changes affecting Land Registry offices at Harrow, York and Durham

From 1 April 2008, Land Registry customers will no longer be able to lodge applications or visit the Customer Information Centres at its Land Registry Harrow and York offices.

The offices are due to close in 2010 as part of a planned programme to reduce office space. The first stage in this process is the transfer to other Land Registry offices of the administrative areas for which Harrow and York are responsible.

As a result of the Land Registration (Proper Office) Order 2007, which comes into force on 1 April 2008, the new proper offices replacing Harrow for applications affecting land are Croydon, Stevenage and Swansea. The new proper offices replacing York are Kingston upon Hull and Durham.

Also from 1 April 2008, the Durham (Boldon) and Durham (Southfield) offices will merge to create a single proper office to be known as Land Registry, Durham Office. However the existing Southfield House and Boldon House addresses will be retained for the delivery of applications. The Customer Information Centre for the merged office will be at Southfield House.

Practice Guide 51 - Areas served by Land Registry offices is being revised and a new edition will be published on 1 April. A copy of the current guide can be viewed or downloaded from www.landregistry.gov.uk

Notes to editors

1. With the world's largest property database of over 21 million titles, Land Registry underpins the economy by safeguarding ownership of many billions of pounds worth of property.

2. As a government department established in 1862, executive agency and trading fund responsible to the Secretary of State for Justice and Lord Chancellor, Land Registry keeps and maintains the Land Register for England and Wales. The Land Register has been an open document since 1990.
