Dr Malcolm Smith to serve an extra two years as Environment Agency Board Member for Wales
The Minister for Environment, Sustainability and Housing Jane Davidson yesterday announced that she has extended Dr Malcolm Smith’s appointment to serve a further two years as the Welsh member of the Environment Agency Board.
Malcolm Smith was first appointed as the Board member for Wales in September 2004 for a period of three years, ending on 31 August 2007. This was extended for a year until 31 August 2008. He has now been reappointed for a further two years, which will run until the 31 August 2010.
Dr Malcolm Smith held senior positions at the Countryside Council for Wales since its inception and was its Senior Director and Chief Scientist. He is an established writer on environment, wildlife, travel and heritage issues, contributing regularly to The Independent and the Daily Telegraph and a number of UK and international magazines.

- The Environment Agency was established under the Environment Act 1995. The Agency’s primary aim is to protect the environment throughout England and Wales and to contribute to sustainable development through integrated management of air, land and water. The Environment Agency Board comprises 14 members. All are appointed by the Secretary for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, except for Malcolm Smith, the Board Member for Wales, who is appointed by Welsh Ministers. The Board is directly responsible to Welsh Ministers for all aspects of the Agency’s organisation and performance in Wales. The Welsh Board member provides a link between the Board and the Environment Agency Wales.

- Malcolm Smith’s current time commitment is 7 days per month for which he receives an annual remuneration of £28,261.
