Reappointment of Chairman and appointment of new Board member to SITPRO Limited

Minister for Trade, Gareth Thomas, today announced two appointments to the Board of SITPRO, the UK's trade facilitation body dedicated to simplifying the international trading process by cutting red tape.

The Minister has reappointed Norman Rose as Chairman and has appointed Ake Georg Nilson as a Non-Executive Director of SITPRO, with effect from 1 January 2009.

Gareth Thomas said:

"Norman Rose has shown considerable commitment to the work of SITPRO during his long involvement with the organisation.

"I believe his strong leadership will enable the organisation to continue to progress going forward.

"I am also pleased to welcome Ake Nilson to the SITPRO Board. His knowledge and experience will be a real asset."

Norman Rose has been on the SITPRO Board since 1998 and Chairman for the last three years. Ake Nilson replaces Catherine Truel, who recently stood down following a two and a half year association with the organisation.

Notes for Editors

1. The appointments have been made in accordance with the requirements of the Office for the Commissioner for Public Appointments.

2. Norman Rose will receive an honorarium of £9,190 per year. The appointment of Ake Nilson is unpaid.

3. Norman Rose has been reappointed for 4 years, from 1 January 2009 to 31 December 2012. He is the former Director-General of BSA, the representative body for business-related services companies. Positions previously held by him include Deputy Secretary of the Law Society of Scotland, Deputy Director of the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) and Associate International General Counsel of Electronic Data Systems (EDS). He has had a long involvement with SITPRO dating back to the early 1990s and he has been a Board member (latterly Acting Chairman) since 1998. Norman Rose does not hold any other public appointments, nor are there any political activities that it is necessary to declare.

4. Ake Nilson has been appointed for 3 years, from 1 January 2009 to 31 December 2011. Ake Nilson set up and has run Marinade Limited (and associated companies) since 1988 as a consultancy dedicated to paperless trade. Additionally, between 1996 and 2001, he chaired a multi-disciplinary taskforce for the development of electronic trade tools within the International Chamber of Commerce. Ake Nilson does not hold any other public appointments, nor are there any political activities that it is necessary to declare.

5. Catherine Truel tendered her resignation after a two and a half year association with the SITPRO Board in order to pursue business projects.

6. SITPRO (formerly the Simpler Trade Procedure Board) was set up in 1970 to undertake work on behalf of Government in the field of trade facilitation namely, the simplification of trade procedures and documentation which will help improve the competitive position of the UK's international trading community. SITPRO is a non-departmental public body and a company limited by guarantee that is currently funded through grant in aid provided by BERR.

7. SITPRO's Board sets SITPRO's strategic direction. Board members are drawn from industry and Government, and are appointed by BERR Ministers. The Board is supported by a network of action groups made up of front-line practitioners, ensuring that the organisation's work is focused on the needs of business.

8. A small team of 10 staff is responsible for the practical implementation of SITPRO's work programme. SITPRO's CEO Malcolm McKinnon was appointed in June 2005.
